Dr. Atsbaha Gebreegzabiher, Head of the Tigray Tourism Bureau, has raised concern over growing restrictions on foreign tourists and project partners traveling to Tigray. In a post shared on his personal Facebook account, Dr. Atsbaha disclosed that, since May 11, 2025, foreign visitors have been prevented from flying into the region — and those already in Tigray are reportedly being told to leave.

“We have received information that foreign tourists and project partners are being banned from coming to Tigray by air, and those who entered earlier are being made to leave,” he wrote.

Dr. Atsbaha further stated that the Tigray Tourism Bureau is actively engaging in discussions with the federal government and the Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA) to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

While the reason for the restrictions remains unclear, the development is a blow to efforts aimed at reviving the region’s tourism and strengthening international partnerships.

In his message, Dr. Atsbaha called on all Tigrayans to take part in restoring the region’s reputation and unity:

“Let us build our damaged image as Tigrayans together. Let us work together to make Tigray a preferred and desirable destination. Let us resolve the threat of insurgents by maintaining our internal unity and peace. Let’s strengthen our international ties.”

The Tourism Bureau is expected to release further updates as more information becomes available.
