In a bold and highly critical statement issued today, the Tigray Peace and Security Bureau has accused Getachew Reda, former President of the Interim Administration of Tigray and current advisor to the Ethiopian Prime Minister on the Horn of Africa, of deliberately undermining the peace process in Tigray.
The statement alleges that Mr. Getachew has betrayed the aspirations of Tigray’s army and people, who have been striving to implement the Pretoria Agreement that ended the devastating war in the region. “Our security forces had high hopes that the implementation of the peace deal would bring about the recovery of Tigray,” the Bureau stated, “but Mr. Getachew spoiled their hopes and attempted to disperse the army and its leadership.”
The Bureau also accused Getachew of colluding with external forces, spreading slander against military leaders, and bypassing government protocols to sell war relics—such as burned weapons collected from battlefields—without official procedures. They claim he used various media platforms to incite division between the people and the armed forces of Tigray.
One of the most serious accusations involves an incident where Getachew allegedly claimed he was being targeted for assassination by members of the Tigray security forces. The Bureau dismissed this as fabricated, calling it “a long distance of lies,” and asserted that no such plot existed. “Let alone killing someone who contributed more or less during the struggle against the enemy — we even captured enemy soldiers who were fighting us face to face to destroy our people and country. We gave them food and water. We are fighters who teach and advise captured enemies and even promote them to honor and rank. The entire Ethiopian people are witnesses to this.” the statement emphasized, citing the humane treatment of captured enemy soldiers as evidence of the Tigray army’s values.
The statement further claims that Getachew has shifted political alignment, accusing him of joining the ruling Prosperity Party and working to erode the unity between the Tigrayan people and their army. It describes his recent actions as a “naked inventive propaganda” that have disgraced him in the eyes of the public.
“We have seen many liars and traitors in the history of the Tigrayan struggle,” the Bureau said, “but never one like Mr. Getachew Reda.”
Concluding the statement, the Bureau warned that the federal government is using Getachew as a tool to weaken the Pretoria Agreement, calling such actions dangerous and counterproductive to peace. They urged the federal authorities to reconsider their approach to avoid reversing the progress made toward sustainable peace in the region.
