Trucks Carrying Goods Blocked En Route to Tigray

Since May 24, 2025, the Ethiopian Customs Commission has reportedly halted trucks transporting various goods and materials from Adatu in the Afar region, and more recently, from Serdo to Tigray via the Serdo-Afdera route. The reasons behind the blockade remain unclear, causing growing concern among businesses, drivers, and residents in the region.

In a new development, multiple trucks carrying goods to Tigray through the Woldiya corridor have also been stopped at the Federal Customs checkpoint at the Chifra junction, south of Woldiya. Customs officials have allegedly informed drivers that their vehicles are not permitted to proceed in either direction.

Despite repeated reports and appeals, the Ethiopian Customs Authority has yet to provide an explanation or resolve the issue. Authorities have refused to allow the loading or unloading of goods at the checkpoints where the vehicles are currently stranded, further exacerbating the crisis.

“If there is a legal or administrative reason for halting these vehicles, it should be clearly communicated to the public through appropriate media channels,” one observer stated. “Moreover, preventive measures should have been in place to avoid damage to goods, particularly perishable items.”

Truck drivers, many of whom are transporting vegetables and essential supplies, have now been stuck for days without guidance or support. Several have raised concerns about the economic toll, as they face mounting expenses and pressure from loan obligations.

“This situation is unacceptable,” one driver said. “We have families to feed and loans to repay. Leaving us parked here for days with no answers is not only irresponsible—it’s inhumane.”

Stakeholders are calling on the Ethiopian Customs Commission to immediately address the situation, communicate transparently, and allow the safe passage or proper redirection of the affected vehicles.
