Mekelle, May 26, 2025 – A new regional political party founded by Getachew Reda, former head of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration and ex-Vice President of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), has received a temporary registration permit from the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).

The party, named “Democratic Solidarity Tigray”, or “Solidarity”, includes several members of the TPLF Central Committee who have aligned with Getachew Reda in a move seen by observers as an internal challenge to the long-dominant TPLF leadership.

According to Redae Halefom, the party’s Media and Communication Coordinator, the group submitted its application for registration as a regional political party two weeks ago and was officially granted a temporary permit today.

“The documents of the new party are based on frameworks originally developed within the TPLF for internal reform,” Redae said. “We are working to bring meaningful change through dialogue and by engaging the Tigrayan public.”

The NEBE’s Communication Unit confirmed the issuance of the three-month temporary registration permit, in accordance with Ethiopia’s Elections, Political Parties Registration and Electoral Ethics Proclamation. The law allows for an extension of the temporary status for an additional three months upon request, provided the party demonstrates sufficient justification.

To gain permanent registration, Democratic Solidarity Tigray must submit its founding document, program, and bylaws. Redae indicated that the party plans to finalize these through inclusive consultations, development initiatives, and a founding conference aimed at mobilizing popular support across the region.
