Urgent Appeal: International Community Must Act to Protect Tigrayans and Prevent Renewed Conflict

The core demand of the people of Tigray, the restoration of constitutional order and an end to the suffering of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees remains ignored not only by the government of Ethiopia but also by the facilitators and observers of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA). The immense challenges faced by Tigrayans continue to escalate. Furthermore, the fragile peace appears to be threatened by the risk of a renewed conflict. As repeatedly stated, the arming of criminal elements involved in serious ethnic cleansing in occupied Western Tigray obstructs the return of IDPs, thereby trapping them in dire camp conditions indefinitely. Another risk factor for conflict is the emerging dispute over the technicalities surrounding the legality of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which is effectively being used to completely undermine the Pretoria CoHA.

Salsay Weyane Tigray remains gravely concerned by the dangerous actions that threaten the safety of the people of Tigray. Therefore, we urgently call upon the international community, particularly the African Union (AU), to give immediate attention to this matter. We urge them to exert pressure on the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) to fulfill its obligations: the return of IDPs and refugees, the restoration of the territorial status quo ante, and the prevention of factors that could lead to a renewed conflict.
